Kids know everything. Between this and Nerf Mods, I think we might have a series going.

In writing the greatest how-to book ever written (TBA), I have not only been a bit lazy about writing letters, but also about updating Randy Writes Letters.

So… last night I posted one I sent to Walgreens a few months ago and also posted one I recently sent to Holland Cotter about his article in the New York Times.

My cats, Io and Milo, have the standard cat toys. You know like mice and uh… mice. They get enough mice at home since we live above a bakery. I decided to quickly whip up some cat toys of things they like to play with. I started with yarn (Io loves to destroy it) and Milo (Io loves to attack him).

allthesteps

Steps:
1. Draw an image. Photocopy it. Make a screen using your handy Gocco or other screen printing tools.
2. Ink the screen to make screen prints.
3. Print the custom cat toy image on felt.
4. Sew around the image. I actually hand basted around the shape and then machine sewed it. Leave an opening to turn it right side out.
5. Turn it right side out. Wasn’t the opening helpful? Stuff the toy with fiberfill and add some catnip for cat enjoyment. Hand stitch the opening closed.
6. Watch your cats’ enjoyment of their custom cat toy.

Any suggestions for more custom cat toys? I was thinking about bras and cockroaches, which are two other things my cats enjoy.

Serving Suggestion
Why am I showing you how to make ranch dressing? Two reasons: For ages I thought it was a secret concoction made in a lab from mysterious ingredients, so in many ways this is “open sourcing” food. Also, if Evan can post about food, why can’t I? I promise it’s not even really that complicated.

Ingredients:
.5 cup mayonnaise
.5 cup whole yogurt
.25 cup 2% milk
2 tbsp. chopped celery leaves
1.5 tbsp. chopped fresh dill
1.5 tbsp. diced onion (sweet or red)
1 clove garlic, diced
1 tsp. dijon mustard
2 tsp. lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste

If you’ve got one, use a food processor to mince the garlic and onion. If not, a knife will do. Whisk all ingredients together and chill for an hour to let the flavors mix before serving. Experiment with the mayo/yogurt ratio and the herbs used.
