New Balloons From OSSI.

November 27th, 2009

I just returned from Seoul, South Korea, where my friend Hojun Song, from Open Source Satellite Initiative, showed me his latest research into high-altitude balloons and long-range transcievers. Im ordering a few sounding balloons from kaymont ASAP. These guys can go to almost 40 km. Well into near space. Let's boldy go where no dead guy has gone before...

Project Icarus How To Guide

October 31st, 2009

The team at Project Icarus jus launched their how-to guide. They basically explain how-to do exactly what i want to do for only $150 dollars. Minus the dead powderly and explosives part. "Hacked" Camera, repurposed cell-phone for GPS, drink coooler vessel, cheap high-altitude balloon, hand warmer to keep it all the electronic bits toast in the stratosphere -- man I love open source.Im gonna miss it when im gone...

Protoflight of Powderly1 in Transylvania in February.

October 9th, 2009

I just found out from my friends at AltArt Foundation that, DIY RIP will be heading to Cluj in February for our prototype flight. Now its time for some logistics. "How hard is it to get potassium nitrate and helium on the eastern side of the Carpathian Mountains?" Who the hell knows. Now time to get down to work.

We are not alone

August 25th, 2009

And just when I was starting to think I was a weirdo for wanting to be a dead astronaut firework, i find all these new comrade necro-cosmonauti through this absurdly awesome site called my funky funeral. I knew there were companies shooting ashes into space and that Hunter S Thompson had been made into a firework... but here are companies also floating peoples ashes into space with helium balloons. You can even buy a range of small fireworks filled with the ashes of your loved ones for that special creepy 4th of July BBQ. But, no one is connecting all the dots: balloon + near space + explosion. I have to start asking my self, If i think all these people are weird for selling these services... how strange am I?
