A FAT + openFrameworks speed project!
Auto Smiley – Computer vision smiley generator from Theo Watson on Vimeo.
Auto Smiley is a computer vision application that runs in the background while you work. The software analyzes your face while you are working and if it detects a smile it sends the the ascii smiley face letters “: )” as keyboard presses to the front most application. Auto Smiley has many uses from just straight up convenience to enforcing honesty in your online communication :)
UPDATE: Windows PC Version!! Courtesy of Joey!
Grab it here.
UPDATE: for non US/UK users try this version – should work on all keyboards! AutoSmiley.app.unikeyboard.zip
Download the mac app here ( for US / UK / NL keyboards ):
AutoSmiley-001-Mac.zip
Download the mac app for QWERTZ keyboards ( thanks Peter! ):
AutoSmiley-QWERTZ.zip
The project uses openFrameworks and MPT for the smile detection – you can grab the source code here: AutoSmiley-OF-0061.zip

THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER
:) auto :p
Ö=
That’s what my app is creating! Why? Ö=
So using this idea it would be possible to create a happy computer system, one that will only allow input if you are smiling?
I would love to see a room of people using them. it would be epic
its ironic that Theo would write this plugin as he is too hard to ever smile, outside of this one test shot

@Silent Rocco because you as me has a Swedish Keyboard. as Theo explains in the video it simulates pressing the keys, space : ) enter, on a swedish Kb that becomes Ö=
@Martin
I live in Germany. So, it’s the same with all European people :)
We need a special app! :) Thanks for the explanation.
nice one :)
I had to change some values in testApp.cpp so it would work with my QWERTZ keyboard.
: is (CGKeyCode)47
) is (CGKeyCode)25

Dude, are you Morgan Grimes from the tv show Chuck?
It is really cool and fun! Thanks for sharing!
What about another one that instead of sending each smile, it detects the smile, tallys up the number of smiles or perhaps frequency during a period and if there are say 3 smiles a minute it updates a twitter account that says “Theo is happy” and if there were 5 smiles a minute it sends “Theo is really happy!” etc. This could also be used to update your “mood” icon on MySpace etc. or it would be really cool if Skype added such a ‘current mood’ tracker. So many potential uses

if only it could detect other emoticons it would be so much better its also a bit to sensitive and to easy to set it of by ascendent :)
like that a speech recognition would also be useful keep up the good work! :)

[…] Développé par Theo Watson, AutoSmiley est un projet permettant d’ajouter automatiquement des smileys à votre texte lorsque vous souriez devant votre webcam (oui derrière cela ne marchera pas).
