Gingers In Paris (X-MIX 2011)

Welcome to the 8th annual X-MIX, an end of the year mixtape celebration. As always, these aren’t necessarily songs released this year, but just a collection of things I’ve listened to in 2011. Thanks to Bobby, LM4K and DJ Prepare for floating many of these tunes my way. Merry X-MIX Internet!

Special Guest hightlights from Awesome New Place

As you may or may not know, I host a weekly radio show on WFMU called Awesome New Place. For the FAT Garage Sale, I thought I’d just highlight some notable internet-related guests I had on the show from this past year;
May 12 2011 – Clams Casino
Clams, noted producer for Lil B, Clams plays a bunch of dope unreleased beats and talks about his strategy of making lots of beats and sending them to lots of people. Its a classic example of release early and often – throw it all against the wall and see what sticks.

April 7 2011 – DJ FILETYPE SWF (aka Joel Holmberg)
Noted internet and IRL artist Joel Holmberg transforms into DJ FILETYPE SWF and djs 2.5 straight hours of websites. Literally – opening tabs in Firefox on .swf sites + shoutouts/mouse clicks + MAD REVERB.

December 9 2010 – Title TK
Title TK is a ‘band’ that talks about music rather than playing it. Howie Chen, Alan Licht, and Cory Arcangel strap on guitars but never plug in and instead talk about music websites, Iron Maiden’s breakup, Vampire Weekend in advertising, etc etc.

November 4 2010 – Jon Rafman
Noted internet and IRL and Second Life artist Jon Rafman talks about his quasi-documentary film Code of Honor, for which he spent months interviewing gamers at Chinatown Fair arcade in NYC, plus a set of video game music and talk of Japanese culture seeping over to North America.

September 2 2010 – G-Chat with Willy Staley
Blogger/author/San Franciso native Willy Staley came through and we dedicated a whole show to talking about what rap and the internet are doing to each other, touching on (no homo) 4Loko, people saying “no homo,” rappers as early adopters of technology, fake viral rap videos, Trap Goin Ham, etc etc.

August 26 2010 – Javelin
FAT-favorites Javelin came through and recorded a live set, and talk about the difficulty of making a show out of electronic music, collaborating, releasing bits and pieces online, and fan feedback.

Thanks to Bobby and Fred for the non-rap influences. The ghosts of X-Mix past (2004-2009) can be downloaded here

G-Chat: Rappers Gettin’ Famo
Last week on my radio show, Awesome New Place, I was joined by author and Nation of Thizzlam blogger Willy Staley, for a special episode called G-Chat.
Our talk circled loosely around rap in the YouTube era, touching on rappers getting famo, memes vs. trends, scraper bikes staying relevant, DIY cereal backpacks and instructional dance videos, Bubb Rubb, turf dancing, format wars, the Lil B – Soulja Boy connection, the culdesac vs. the hood, haul videos and mommy blogging, bros icing bros, 4Loko, white tees, vans, and “How the Looming Specter of Viral Marketing Ruins Rap Songs About Consumer Goods.”
Though we raised more questions than we answered, its definitely a must-listen chapter in FAT’s ongoing discussions of famo, viral marketing, and rap.
Stream the show right here and view the playlist for tons of links to relevant vids and media on all the above topics and so much more.
“If you’re doing the reverse running man in skinny teal jeans in your culdesac and no one is there to film it, what are you really doing?” – Willy Staley, 2010
My First Live Stream
fi5e hosted an off the chain chaotic picnic for Teorías del Caos at Mangum Lab in Mexico City, earlier today.
This occasion is also his first , with extra points for the compiz*.
To watch this properly on the internets: pay attention to the rap alert, follow this slides and grab the p1cn1c special with fi5e’s favorite Whiz Khalifa trax.
Chaos showed up as usual, so you are going to miss some advances on some upcoming bad ass projects. Stay tuned for live chaos next month with El Proyecto Sonidero and DJ /rupture

2008 – Three Six Mix
After enjoying everyones wicked mixes (loving evan’s and fru’s 08 mixes) I felt it was only right to throw up a mix minutes before 2009.
As I was putting the tracks together I realized that 90% of the music I have been listening to in 2008 was Three Six Mafia – so here is a good representation of my musical year in 2008 – a mix of all 36 tracks.
Most of these were discovered via the 36 player so some of the mp3 are of questionable audio quality. Hope you like it – it starts a little gangster and ends a little horror.
Merry Fuckin Chanukah
Get it while it’s hot: Frumix 2008 (don’t shuffle, there’s an ordering here).
I’ve been working on this one for a while. Not because it’s so great, but because with my own convention of only including music that is new to me since the previous mix, it can be hard to get to a full 10 or 15 songs.
Don’t hate cuz Snoop snuck on or cuz KRS is even preachier in his old age; the Kanye track you’ve never heard before absurd Ghotsface flow-fest make it worth dropping before the year is out. Props to Evan and Bennet for the Knife and J. Valentine tracks that I never would have heard otherwise.
If that’s not enough, there’s also a new personal best of Redman mix (again, no shuffling).
If you’re a fan of FunkDoc then there’s not much new there. Otherwise, you’ve been sleeping, so wake up!
PS if you don’t already have them, grab Frumix 2003, 2004, and 2006 while you’re at it.
PPS Credit where it’s due: among the extremely useful and free software packages I used to make these mixes are: Audacity, MP3Tag, and Winamp.
PPPS UPDATE: Audacity/LAME actually wrote out the MP3 frame headers and length tag to be all messed up, so the first version of the new Frumix 2008 would have given you issues in most MP3 players. That’s been all fixed now using a fix I found on the web.
