Personally, as an artiste, I know my work isn’t finished until 1) my mom calls to tell me how disappointed she is in me or 2) I get a cease & desist letter for copyright infringement. So, what does it mean if you get a C&D from iconoclast street artist Shepard Fairey for your parody of his senescent work. Well, for Baxter Orr, it means you can def clock out for the day my brother and celebrate a job well done. And for Shepard, i think it means you’re basically finished too.

Saw this on boingboing and made me think it might be a nice FAT/GRL project kind of in the vein of POV Cam – tools for graffiti writers/activists to stay anonymous in the city. This one uses a super bright IR LED array to overwhelm the CCD of the camera. Looks super dorky but the same principle could be applied to under the peak of a baseball cap or through the front of the mesh.

 
Michael Naimark takes the laser approach, describing in his paper different ways to setup lasers to target a camera. I especially like the idea of cheap laser pointers on mini camera tripods to fix the laser on the target and then just leave it there until the battery runs out. Could also be combined with the soon to be released GRLv powerthief as a way to have it everlasting!

 
For embedded systems Infra Red Lasers might be a dope solution. The laser would not be visible to the human eye so it would make finding the source quite difficult – yet it would have the same effect on the camera. They can be made quite easily – it is just a matter of removing the IR blocking filter from the laser pointer and replacing it with some Kodak Wratten 87C (or developed film). Anyway thought I would get some ideas going. Lets make some 2008 era, James Bond worthy tools!

This time we’re opening up the process of finding pro bono legal assistance with filing our articles of incorporation through the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts in New York. To get the ball rolling, the FAT Lab called the Art Law Line and recorded two phone conversations with VLA staff. It was almost exactly like talking to Star Jones. As a result of these steamy conversations, the FAT Lab has signed up for the VLA Nonprofit Incorporation and Tax-exempt Status workshop on November 12th. The workshop costs $75 duckets and is the first step toward the VLA finding and assigning the Lab pro bono legal support. For more info on the VLA workshop click here. I always thought that if I went to prison, I’d try to get some reading done.

I haven’t gotten caught yet, so its hard to test my theory. But luckily (luckily?) FAT has its own Convicted Fellow, Mike Baca. Mike just started his three month bid at Rikers (the whole story + how to help can be found —> here <—), so I put together a package of books that I hope can help him through his incarceration. Mike’s “Summer of Bummer” (no homo) reading list goes as follows:

Watchmen – Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. One of the illest comics of all time, Moore kills it with the storyline. Great scenes of New York getting utterly destroyed in the near-apocalypse.

Batman: Year One – Frank Miller. Also on the comics tip, Miller is the author of the recently-re-popularized Sin City series, but I think he shines best here illuminating the nascent years in the story of my favorite superhero. Beautiful murky colors throughout.

Comics are good to escape, but I wanted to provide something scholarly as well, a real investigation to wrap the mind around in a different way. I considered books about corruption in government and racist cops, but I figured Mike will probably get enough of that first hand. Eventually I went with

The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York – Robert Caro. Weighing in at a whopping 1,336 pages, this Pulitzer Prize winner could last Mike all 3 months, after which point he can lend it to me. But hey, what better subject for a graffiti writer is there than the man who truly left his mark all-the-fuck-over New York?

Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip Hop Generation – Jeff Chang. A great read, really covers all the social movements, and goes into depth with specific albums and artists, but not too clinical. Sent him my own copy.

On October 25th, in New York City, Evan, Jonah Peretti and I signed the FAT Lab articles of incorporation. You basically need one of these documents and three board members to begin your own revolutionary non-profit jump-off. As part of our Lab How-To (How to start you own phat, non-profit Lab), we’ve included a pdf, zip scan and an OpenOffice doc of our incorporation certificate. Just click on the OpenOffice document, fill in your name and info in the sections annotated in red, write a check for $75 duckets and mail that john to the address listed here and you too can join corporate America. It might also help to have a music video:
