The Acer Aspire One ZG5 is currently one of the hotter new items in the Hong Kong electronics market. It is a small (9.75″ x 6.75″) and cheap (3,400 HK$ or $436 USD) laptop running from a 1.6GHz Atom N270, 1gb ram, and an 8gb solid state hd. Out of the box it comes with a Linpus Linux opperating system (which looks like this). I found the OS to be functional but lacking a lot of what I love about Ubuntu, so I installed Ubuntu 8.04. The Aspire has no optical drive so you need to connect an external CD drive containing the boot CD. Ubuntu installs very easily on this device, the only problem I had was getting the the wireless to work for which I needed to follow these easy 5 steps.

Mine was purchased from Centrafield in the Golden Computer Arcade (one of the largest electronics markets in HK). To get to the market take the MTR to the Sham Shui Po stop, exit out of the D escalator, and look for this sign.

Huge love to my overly generous Chinese brother Neo for the gift.

I thought I would celebrate my recent move from NYC to Hong Kong with a commemorative East meets West edition FFFFFat Stacks omelet. For scrambled eggs and ramen you will need 3 eggs, olive oil, vegetarian ramen (for all my non-meat eating heads), baby corn (broken into thirds) and baby mushrooms (baby veggies are always more fun then their grown up counter parts). Cook the babies in a frying pan with some olive oil. While those are simmering put half of the ramen package (make sure to include half the spices as well) into a bowl and pour on just enough hot water to make them soft. Once the vegetables are cooked put them off to the side, re-oil the pan, and pour in 3 eggs beaten with a spash of olive oil and water. Mix in the cooked veggies and ramen and get your scramble on.

Fattie Evan Roth is flying off to Hong Kong with his supergirl wife to begin working with our future Chinese overlords on a plan for world domination. We’ll be sending him off in style Sunday (SUNDAY!) the 11th from 3-6pm in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. And, dear reader, you are invited. This is your last chance to pester Evan about how L.A.S.E.R. tag actually works (you: “Wait so you’re writing on the wall? What happens when the projector gets turned off” Evan:”Zzzzzz”) because you know he wont answer your email. Geeks: please try not to be awkward.

Sorry for the late notice (not really) and to further rub it in your eye, it’s a pot luck, so bring food. We’ll try to find a grassy knoll somewhere near the 5th st. and 9th ave. entrance.

Note: Look in the comments of this post for plans if it rains.

YYYEEEAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
