How do we give value to immaterial goods? How do we buy and sell digital images? What is the relationship between economics and digital aesthetics? How can curators and artists create new platforms and models for the creation of economic exchange? These are some of the questions that this show attempts to answer. We are currently accepting artwork (video, jpg, gifs, 3d models or HTML content) that will feature in a unique gallery-based exhibition. The exhibition is composed of two parts – a gallery-sited virtual show, and the online production and distribution of materially-realised limited-edition goods.

GERALDINE JUAREZ – SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT TO SEE THE MARKET CRASH

When you think about it, it’s funny how the highly complex mechanisms of the market are always represented by the simplest possible image: A horizon; a simple line separating the earth from the sky.”
For her first solo show in Copenhagen, Geraldine Juarez is taking on the stock market. The well-known zigzag lines representing the movements on stock market indexes such as the NASDAQ, Dow Jones or the CAC40 are at the core of Geraldine Juarez’ work for the current exhibition.
“When the stock market crashed in 2008, we were all talking about it even though no one really understood what they were talking about. In that way, the market is very esoteric.”
The esoteric quality of the financial market renders it somewhat cultish with its weight on the world, its interpreters like high priests and its temples on Wall Street. Geraldine Juarez’ works for the current exhibition play into the cult-like nature of the stock market by mirroring the fundamental value behind financial transactions and its symbols, i.e. gold. The gilded 3D prints of various stocks and equity prices become pieces of pop culture jewellery as does the elegant gold and mirror representation of the 2010 flash crash – the fastest stock market crash to date, where the market crashed in seconds only to recover its losses minutes later.
The Golden Nica is replica of the Greek Nike of Samothrace. It is a handmade wooden statuette, plated with gold, so each trophy is unique: approximately 35 cm high, with a wingspan of about 20 cm, all on a pedestal. “Prix Ars Electronica” is a phrase composed of French, Latin and Spanish words, loosely translated as “Electronic Arts Prize.”
F.A.T NIKA v 1.0 is a freestyle replica of Ars Electronica’s Golden Nica: “one of the most important awards for creativity and pioneering spirit in the field of digital media.” The replica is a 3d modelled object statuette copied from a wikipedia photograph, a la old school.
The prestigious award now can be easily reproduced infinite times -digitally or physically- and use it to recognize any creative expression you dig (including your own!), while showing blatant disregard to the scarcity promoted by the art market and the artificial sanctity of juries, curators and gatekeepers.
